Since 1997, The Baptist Cancer Genetics Program has provided adult cancer genetic counseling services to the Memphis area and the Mid-South. Cancer genetic counselors help to identify patients who have hereditary risks for cancer, coordinate genetic testing, and participate as part of the oncology team. Patients and their family members who have hereditary cancer risks benefit from increased cancer surveillance and cancer prevention strategies. The department of Genetics within the Baptist Centers for Cancer Care has a longstanding relationship with the Baptist Foundation since its inception. Almost 100 patients have had genetic testing either partially or fully funding by Foundation funds. Each of these patients and their families have benefited from this information because it allows the counselor and physicians to make personalized screening and surgical recommendations based on the results.
